  • **review from http://www.geocities.com/nseverino/RK103_Review_02.html

  • Packaging

  • What can I say, G&G is not a Marui wannabe. Box art is excellent but then that's a matter of personal taste. Internally, they still shun environemental correctness by using styro but they do ensure the rifle will not rattle about in transit. It comes with the 2006 product catalogue, the 104 manual with a 103 insert, cleaning rod, one hicap plastic magazine, complementrary peanut er bb packet, target sheets and front sight adjustment tool. Notwithstanding the english, the manual is adequate to begin using the gun and rudimentary disassembly. However, disassembly for upgrading and maintenance is not illustrated and there is no parts list or exploded diagram so DIY-ers will have to go online.

  • External Fit and Finish

  • As I mentioned earlier, I've been fortunate enough to own a G&G M14 and handle their UMG, frankly speaking the fit and finish of the 103 is IMPRESSIVE if not their best to date. Just as in the real 103, metal parts are either metal or aluminum and plastic parts are, well, plastic. Save for the receiver cover and rear sling mount, there is no rattle or squeak on this gun. Rust may be a problem as the pictures have shown some areas I did not see before plus I've seen much older units with rusted receiver covers and cleaning rods. And they look really authentic.

  • The paint does not have any blemish or discoloration and to my untrained eye very real-steel-listic looking. In terms of durability, I've taken it apart several times already and skirmished with it and the paint seems to be taking it all in stride. During the course of abuse in the field it may wear the way the real steel version would and add to the enjoyment and character of the gun. One should expect that the selector and disassembly levers will cause wear lines as you manipulate them. The disassembly lever in particular is rather tight fitting and will gouge out a rather deep line the first time you take the rifle apart as can be seen in the photos. I've read these are hallmark traits of the real AK so that's really cool as far as I'm concerned.

  • Plastic parts also do not show any discoloration however mold marks and seams are present. I wonder if G&G replicated the texture of the real 103 or fumbled it. The pistol grip looks rubbery with a smooth texture, the foregrips are satin finished and slightly rough while the buttstock is very, very rough. Then there is the plastic hicap magazine that is also finished nicely save for the seams though I have the notion the real thing is likely to have them as well. There is an interesting dilemna with the magazine. I could be mistaken but it looks more like the AK101 magazine chambered for the 5.56NATO and not the 103's, 74's or 47's. Well, I'm at a lost for words on that one.

  • I don't know what markings are present on the real 103 but I don't miss them. Unlike, say if this was an AR/M16/M4 variant where missing (or even worse, bastardized) markings are part and parcel of the ownership experience. The only markings are for the fire selector and a "1974" stamping. The G&G Armament logo is hidden in the magwell and just like the other markings very nicely done. The only other marking worth mentioning is on the magazine and just like the others was properly made and totally within Marui and Western Arms quality.

  • What stands out the most for me are the compensator and rivets. The compensator is distinctive to the 74/101/103 and and was reproduced so well that it is cool and menacing all at once. Just like the other parts of the gun, the paint was well laid on and matched to the other metal bits. It even has the springloaded plunger to prevent lossening of the threaded compensator. The barrel is flat grayish black while the compensator and gas block bits are a semigloss black finish creating a very nice contrast.

  • Next are the faux rivets which until you disassemble the gun you would think actually hold the bits together and go through and through. I admit, when I first saw pictures of this AEG it was the rivets that caught my eye.

  • It's also worth mentioning the attention to detail exhibited by G&G. The selector lever and sight adjustment buttons both have nice crisp checkering, a detail that could easily have been bypassed but G&G still chose to replicate.

  • Due to the high degree of recognizeability and authenticity of this AEG I really, really do not recommend taking it out in public particularly in the North Hollywood, California area or downtown Baghdad. 'Les you want to draw the attention of local law enforcement or militia...OR be recruited by Al Quaeda. From my own experience as I was testing it inside our backyard, a couple of carpenters saw me and remarked "it's an AK47." Pretty darn close I'd say.

  • G&G had some rough spots with the first batch of GR16's, UMG's and M14's. To their credit they addressed it by sending out upgrade kits and parts that could be installed at no cost. Support you do not get from it's Japanese counterpart. Better yet, it also showed that G&G had the capacity for excellence but was just encountering a speed bump along the way. Perhaps they needed to change something in the manufacturing process or find that one errant employee on the assembly line. Whatever it was I believe G&G could pull off Marui level quality internally and it was just a question of when.

  • As always I do my own modifications so for this one I had settled on some very basic upgrades. A PDI 190 spring, aluminum ported piston head with bearing, metal bushings and air seal nozzle. Nothing fancy. Normally I also replace motors with Marui's excellent EG 1000 series but this time I decided to try it out first with the stock motor (that by the way looks like a Systema unit). I bought these parts prior to openeing the mechbox and as it turns out I was in for a surprise.

  • According to the advertising literature it disassembles like the real thing. The receiver cover, gas tube, bolt carrier, recoil spring and foregips do come off in the same manner as the real 103 and require no tools. As do the compensator, cleaning rod and rear sights. The buttstock and selector lever will require screwdrivers. Finally, the outer barrel and hop assemblies will require an allen wrench to remove 6 screws. About the only thing missing is the real steel bolt and firing pin assembly. After some online research for detailed disassembly procedures I had the mechbox on my table for dissection.

  • The mechbox is a standard Marui version 3 finished in black with the spine support doubling as a wiring guide. Neat. So the wiring is not pinched during reassembly (want me to translate that to Japanese?). The motor has a sturdy looking cage with wiring soldered on as opposed to using gold connectors. There are 2 armatures for the fire selector function that will fall off so be sure to note their position relative to the selector plate on the opposite side before removing them. Although I don't think you can install them incorrectly, still, a quick digicam shot is easier than trial and error. Even before I opened it I got 3 very pleasant surprises. The hop up chamber is metal, the nozzle appears to be an air sealed version (but plastic still) and it has 6mm BEARINGS installed already. A quick check of G&G literature did not indicate this so a memo should be given to G&G's Marketing group. It doesn't hurt to flaunt what you have that your competitor doesn't. Then again, it was indeed a very, very pleasant surprise so perhaps they kept quiet and left it as an "Easter Egg" for the DIY-er to find. Nice..

  • The hopup as mentioned is metal so it should add to the accuracy and power department. When I removed the inner barrel I also found that G&G adopted (or used) the Systema brass ring system to improve barrel accuracy and sealing. Again, something not found on stock AEG's. I fired off an email to G&G asking if the barrel is a tight 6.04 similar to the M14 but got no response. Still, I do wonder. Mind you it is NOT an AK length inner barrel of 455mm, it's nearer to 460mm. In fact, I think a 469mm would be better due to the compensator.

  • The piston head is a ported transparent plastic version WITH bearing. Kinda makes me wonder why Marui still uses unported and bearingless heads. Still, I'm partial to aluminum heads so I replaced it and regreased everything. The cylinder body is a type-0 and the spring guide is plastic with a bearing system at its base.

  • Reassembly went without a hitch and typical of other version 3's I test fired the mechbox even before reassembling the entire gun. I also took the time to lube the selector plate armatures just to reduce any binding internally after I reassemble the kit. Although I have no way of telling how much the lubing and shimming improved the gun, it did sound a lot smoother with the same RPM even with the stiffer spring.

  • When I bought the gun I also got an AK T-type 9.6v 1900mAh battery and after a quick bit of charging it went in perfectly. This battery configuration is estimated to handle the spring setup for at least 4 hicap magazines or 2400 rounds. I pulled the trigger and NOTHING HAPPENED. Okay dufus, you probably discharged the battery in your haste to play with your new toy. Out came the multitester and it showed the battery fully charged. Oh-kay. I checked the fuse and whoa, it was blown. Duh? After replacing the fuse I noticed something I hadn't seen earlier, the wiring polarities where switched! I pulled out the battery for my M4 and compared the AK battery and wiring harness. The 103's harness was assembled ass-backward during manufacture. A quick reassembly of the plug and I was in business. Okay, so maybe the gremlin hasn't been found. If G&G needs a QA section manager I'm available.

  • The selector was loose initially but a little tightening of the lone retaining screw resolved this. Ergonomics wise it's a fair bit of stretch especially for one used to M4 and G36 selectors. But that's really how the AK was designed. Pulling back on the cocking lever exposes the hop adjustment and it's really just the same one on the Marui AK except that its metal. It's easy to manipulate and holds the setting very well. The cocking lever does not lock back and has a good amount of resistance along with a hefty metallic feel. I suspect a lot of people will be playing with this if for no other reason but to hear it slam close.

  • Trigger pull is no different from the M4 and G36, infinitely better than the G&G M14. Single shots even in full-auto setting are doable. The pistol grip is a tad smallish even for my Asian-average hands but again this is the way the AK grip was designed. This is a good candidate for the King Arms replacement for those willing to forgoe the look for function.

  • Winding the magazine took a fair bit of time and effort but not excessively so. Inserting the magazine also took a bit of effort but in return you got a solid, shake-free insertion. I do wonder if this plastic version is as durable as the metal one. The magazine lock is positive and releases just as cleanly as well as feeling sturdy for an airsoft replica. Feeding has thus far proven reliable, with a fair bit of winding during lulls to ensure adequate spring pressure. The magazine is also a trifle long just like the real thing, so prone firing positions are difficult to achieve without practice.

  • The sights are an excellent copy of the real steel...to good to a fault in fact. Both front and rear are adjustable for elevation but there is no provision for adjusting deflection or preventing it on the rear sight. Forget about your single shot kills on the M4, G36 or MP5. These sights are only a reference...spray, pray and follow the bb trail is gonna be your mantra when you deploy with this gun. So it's really good the mag has a humongous 600 round capacity. You're gonna need it and then some. The rear sight does have a nice solid spring providing it stability and the adjustment is solid and positive. The front is also very loose but easily resolved with a little thread lock compound after sighting it in.

  • A few other minor quibbles...the battery cover requires removing 2 screws whenever you need to recharge them. I'm sure people won't mind tipping towards functionality by incorporating a spring loaded access panel instead. Also, the rear sling mount taps incessantly against the plastic buttstock unless you remove it, hold it down or insulate it somehow. Still on the sling mount, the mounting method could use some improvement. I find the screw/nut pairing a bit flimsy and finnicky to install. Imbedding the nuts would ease installation and prevent loss.

  • In the field the unprotected rear sights are a bit scary. One can all to easily hook this up to a tree or vine and loose it or break it somehow. But again, that's inherent in the design and not G&G's fault.

  • I also wish that it had the M14's spring release mechanism. During one skirmish I inserted the mag while the nozzle was retracted causing a major misfeed that tore my hop. Some people are against this mechanism but I for one wouldn't mind having it. Not only will it prevent magazine insertion misfeeds it'll also preserve the spring and ease disassembly.

  • Finally, instead of the truncated faux barrel cleaning rod, G&G could've gone the extra mile and incorporated a full-length one for the odd bb jams. Just like when I inserted the mag on a retracted nozzle.

  • But like I said, these are minor and not worth worrying about at the point of purchase. One is better off worrying about what to tell the little lady when you get home toting this bugger. "It's for the kids honey."

  • Overall this AEG inspires confidence in use and that if anything defines an exceptional weapon. With the battery located in the stock balance is perfect and fully loaded it actually seems lighter than my Marui M4. Range is good thanks to it's long inner barrel, type 0 cylinder and metal hop. Full auto grouping is adequately tight but it will require testing in an isolated location to provide some empirical data such as groupings on a paper target. Hitting a soda can at range consistently is doable once you've compensated for the sights, in my case placing it between the left ear and center post of the front sight. Chrono estimates put the setup at 480 fps on a PDI 190 after adjusting for the use of 0.28 bbs. The gun is built so solidly that you will not think twice about running in the field with it or using a 3 point sling on it, unlike the infamous Marui M4/M16. Maybe even butt whipping (figuratively) someone when you run out of ammo or are lucky enough to sneak in behind them.

  • The internals are a treat as most upgrades are already there even though G&G fails to mention them, perhaps intentionally. Buyers should note this and adjust their upgrade purchasing priorities accordingly. Upgrades to what's left is just as fun as disassembly is easy if a bit involving due to the fair amount of parts. With what I've heard about the durability of G&G parts these components should also last a fair bit especially for a mild upgrade such as mine.

  • The only improvement that comes to mind is with regards to the sight but I have reservations on that. Although the AK74M and 101 already have mounting points for attaching a rail assembly for reddots and scopes, the traditionalist in me is screaming foul. Mounting sophisticated sights seem to run against the grain of simplicity upon which the AK is founded on. The AR/M16 family has evolved such that a rig without some sort of bauble or bolt on is naked to the avid player. In stark contrast is the AK that does the job it was designed for with the simplest of designs such that any addition is like desecrating a shrine.

  • A few other mild complaints are the screw mounted battery compartment and the absence of a spring release.

  • I bought the G&G RK103 with the mindset that I would use it during those non-milsim days or for OPFOR roles. The way it's turning out I just might use it even in milsim and just excuse myself as operating behind the lines.

  • As Clint Eastwood put it in the (fairly entertaining) movie Heartbreak Ridge "this is the preferred weapon of your enemy" and now it seems mine as well. And you remember that Marui AK47 that I was "supposed" to get. I stepped out of the store and NEVER looked back. Tokyo Marui, you have been warned.
